Byzantine Worlds Seminar: Hannah Hagemann
'The “Khārijite” Uprising of Muṭarrif b. al-Mughīra - Patterns of Rebellion in the Marwānid Period', Hannah Hagemann (University of Hamburg)

This talk will look at a little-studied rebellion from the late 7th century CE, the uprising of the local governor Muṭarrif b. al-Mughīra al-Thaqafī, which is largely depicted as a Khārijite revolt. A re-assessment of the available evidence suggests a different interpretation, however, one that situates Muṭarrif within a whole series of rebellions against Umayyad-Marwānid rule led by Arab tribal notables (ashrāf) in Iraq, Arabia, and the East. The connections between these uprisings in terms of participants and grievances have not featured prominently in scholarship thus far and so warrant a closer look. Simultaneously, Muṭarrif’s case is a good starting point for a re-evaluation of Khārijism in this period, which is too often viewed only as an example of religious fanaticism. Over the course of this presentation, therefore, another reading of Khārijism and ashrāfī rebellions will be suggested that offers both complementary and differing interpretations of the patterns characterising Marwānid-era revolts.
